It’s Been a Long Time …

… since I rock and rolled. About two and a half years to be exact. Zepplin reference aside, a lot of things have changed, some good, some bad. The past is the past they say, so time to move forward.

My latest endeavor is getting my sorry butt in shape. My wife Aimee actually got the ball rolling when she decided to shed a few pounds and bought EA Sports Active for the Wii. Since the best way to change a behavior is to have a partner to do it with (and act as your conscience) I suggested we start a little Biggest Loser competition. That being one of her favorite shows, she was very enthusiastic. So much so, she invited half the neighborhood to join us. So now we have a group of seven of us, trying to lose the highest percentage by August 30th. That’s the “official” end of summer for us since it’s the last day before the kids go back to school. The current standings can be found here and as you can see, I’m having a bit of trouble. The first couple weeks went great and then came our vacation to Vegas. Eight days of unlimited buffets is not good for any diet even when you are trying to be good. Regardless, Aimee and I were both happy to come back and not gain any weight. So now it’s two weeks until our next weigh in and time to kick the exercise into gear.

We Want a Recount

It’s another south Florida voting debacle! Peyton Manning as MVP? I demand a recount. What is so special about a performance that would have been considered mundane for any other game of the season. A paltry 247 yards passing, only one touchdown, and of course, that INT that gave the Bears huge momentum in the first quarter after a kickoff run back for a touchdown. The fact that the offensively-inept Bears couldn’t capitalize shouldn’t take away from the fact that Manning pulled a classic choke-job in the first 2 minutes of the biggest game of his life.

Super Bowl MVP? No Way.

Now, I will give Peyton some credit. He settled down and did orchestrate some atypical hard nosed football drives that really kicked the crap out of the Bear’s defense. But where would those drives have been without the tandem of rookie Joseph Addai (19 rushes, 10 catches, 143 total yards) and Dominic Rhodes (21 rushes, 113 rushing yards, and a TD.) In the first drive of the second half Addai touched the ball in 9 of the 12 plays leading to a Vinatieri field goal. The drive chewed an amazing 7:34 off the clock! On the next drive, it was Rhodes accounting for all 52 yards on the drive (Peyton contributed a couple of incomplete passes to put them into third and long.) Those two drives took up almost ten minutes of play and put the Colts up by two scores. You want to give a car to an MVP, either of those backs was more deserving than Manning.

Who do I really think should get the MVP? My vote would be for Rex Grossman, he contributed more to the Colts win than anyone else. Seriously though, the Colts won this game because they physically manhandled the Bears on both sides of the line. Manning had so much time to throw it was a minor miracle that he didn’t torch the Bear’s secondary like an arson with a flamethrower. And for all the talk about how Indy can’t stop the run, the Bear’s 1-2 punch of Thomas Jones and Cedric Benson were held in check for most of the game. Aside from Jones’ 52-yard run in the first quarter, Bear’s runners averaged a pedestrian 3.7 yards per carry. Superbowl MVP? Give it to Tony Dungy. He’s taken a prissy dome team with a prissy quarterback and showed last night that they could be a grind-it-out in the mud power football team.

One of the things I’ll remember most about SuperBowl XLI is a comparison between Peyton Manning, Superbowl MVP, and Rex Grossman, Superbowl Goat. In the middle of a first quarter that seemed to take forever, Manning botched a handoff to Addai who was already being tackled. During the ensuing fumble, Manning tip-toed behind the play pointing at the ball when he was clearly in one of the best positions to recover it. Later on in the game, on a botched snap that squirted away from Grossman, Rex was one of the first to go for the loose ball, earning him a spot on the bottom of the pigpile. Why is it that the “Great Peyton Manning” won’t go for a fumble (that he lost incidentally) and lowly Rex Grossman will? One word, guts. Something the Manning family is in short supply of. Superbowl MVP? Puh-lease, I think I saw some hanging chads.
